The Yellow Emperor#somewhat later than Emperor Yan, was another Chinese tribal leader of remote antiquity. As he was born close to the Jishui River, he adopted the surname Ji.He once lived on a hill called xuanyuan,so he was also named Xuanyuan. It is said that during the time ofthe Yellow Emperor there were five emperors, east. South, west, north and center, being in charge, respectively of wood, fire, metaI, water and earth. The Yellow Emperor was charge of earth which is superior to other elements and fundamental to allcreatures. Moreover, since yellow is the color of the earth and Xuanyuan che symbol of earth, he was thus called Emperor Huang,or Yellow Emperor.

The emperor#s father was also a tribal chief. At one night in early winter, Emperor Huang,s mother went out for a walk.Suddeftly, a flash of silver white lightning appeared in the sky.She watched it whirl around the Big Dipper and then disappear immediately. At the same time, she felt a strange sensation in her body and after a while, she reaIized she had been impregnated by the thunder and lightning. After 24 months, pregnancy, she gave birth to Emperor Huang. The newborn Yellow Emperor had a prominent forehead in the shape of the sun; his face was ljke a dragon and his hands and feet like dragon, S cIaws.Strangest of all,the Yellow Emperor is said to have four faces so that he could see in four directions and hear sound from eight directions at the same time.

It is also said that he could speak immediately he was born and that before long he could walk; by age ten he had visited all the famous mountains and rivers. When he grew up,he was tall and broad-shouldered, stout—waisted, clear of eye and broad of mind. At the age of 15, admired by all,he was chosen as chief of the clan.According to archaeological findings and written his torical records, the clan ruled by the Yellow Emperor took dragon as thejr totem, which is why the Chinese people later became known as descendents of the dragon.

The Yellow Emperor Lived at the later stage of the primitive society. The peace that prevailed in Emperor Yan,s time was a thing of the past, and intertribal wars erupted frequently.Facing such a situation, he organized and trained his people to practice martial arts and fight so as to protect his own clan,s property against encroachment.Other neighboring clans all submitted.and allied with his and he was elected as the leader.Later, the clans led by the Yellow Emperor and Emperor Yan entered into an alliance to fight against the clan of the legendary tribal leader Chiyou to the south, and defeated him in three big decisive battles.Later on.with the continuous expansion Of Emperor Huang,s strength,he finally united a large area in the Yellow River basin, thus putting an end to primitive society. The peace that prevailed in Emperor Yan,s time was a thing of the past, and intertribal wars erupted frequently.Facing such a situation, he organized and trained his people to practice martial arts and fight so as to protect his own clan,s property against encroachment.Other neighboring clans all submitted.and allied with his and he was elected as the leader.Later, the clans led by the Yellow Emperor and Emperor Yan entered into an alliance to fight against the clan of the legendary tribal leader Chiyou to the south, and defeated him in three big decisive battles.Later on.with the continuous expansion Of Emperor Huang,s strength,he finally united a large area in the Yellow River basin, thus putting an end to primitive wars and leading the society to bid farewell to the age of barbarism.

During the process of ending the ancient wars, his clan, those of Emperor Yan and of Chiyou, and other primitive clans had become unprecedentedly integrated, gradually forming the embryonic form of the Chinese race.

Emperor Huang had four wives over his lifetime. People in later generations respectfully called his first wife the "Goddess of Silkworms" because she taught people how to raise silkworms and weave silk to make clothes. Of his wives, the ugliest was also the most talented and very kind-hearted. It is said that Cang Jie, the official who created the Chinese script, even made a character“好(good)”specifically for her.Cang Jie said.“Men and women, no matter what they look like,so long as they love each other,it is good.” It is said that the Yellow Emperor reigned for 100 years and died at the age of ll5.In the end,he returned to heaven riding a dragon. In commemoration of his merits.people buried the clothes and crowns he left behind at Mount Qiaoshan in Shaanxi. This is the origin of the Yellow Emperor Mausoleum.

It is recorded in history books that sacrificial ceremonies were held for the Yellow Emperor as far back as the second century BC.The largest and most impressive one was the one held by Liu Che,Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty. In 110 BC,he led a troop of 1 80,000 soldiers to inspect the norhern part of his empire to display his military prowess to the Huns who frequently plundered the borders of the Han Empire. On his way back to Chang,an,he passed by Mount OiaoShan and saw the tall and majestic Yellow Emperor Mausoleum. He stopped the march and prepared to offer sacrifices, ordering each soldier to carry and pile up two buckets of earth, creating the 20一meter—tall“Terrace of Prayers to the Immortals” opposite to the tomb mound in a single night. The next day,at Sunrise, Emperor Wu ordered his l80.000 soldiers to stand facing the mausoleum.Martial music rose from a11 directions and f1ags in different colors fluttered all over the mountain slopes. The emperor took off his armor and slowly ascended to the Terrace of Prayers to the Immortals and prayed for blessings from the Yellow Emperor that his Han Empire should enjoy peace forever. He also prayed that he himself might be become an immortal like the Yellow Emperor and ascend to heaven as soon as possible.
