ZJU-UWA Joint Research Lab in Genomics and Nutriomics
The joint research laboratory in Genomics and Nutriomics was opened on 28th March 2006, aimed at strengthening collaboration between the University of Western Australia and Zhejiang University that established a memorandum of understanding in November 2005.The overall aim of the joint laboratory is to use two model plant model systems, Arabidopsis and Rice, to investigate energy metabolism and nutrition in plants. The expertise in energy biology and Arabidopsis at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology at UWA will be complemented by the expertise in plant nutrition and rice genetics at the College of Life Sciences at ZJU.
The opening of the joint laboratory will allow exchange of researchers and students between both institutions to fully utilize the expertise in the techniques of bioinformatics, genomics, metabolomics and proteomics in both locations.
The research projects in the joint lab in this year:
- Functional genomics analysis of root development.
Some Ph.D and Master students in ZJU are trained in some new biologic techniques after the laboratory has been equipped last year. That greatly facilitates their research working.
- Molecular profiling of rice seed germination under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
The four undergraduate students recruited to the joint lab have taken part in the second project within this year. Another two students will enter the Ph.D studies for double doctoral degree in the joint lab.
Within the last year and this year, the research staffs and Ph.D student at UWA and ZJU have visited their partner laboratory for purpose of training in techniques and the use of equipment. Such more visits would be established to enable postgraduate students and undergraduate students for research training and collaborative research.

ZJU-UCLA Summer Research Program
The Zhejiang University- UCLA Summer Research Program is a training program aimed at exposing students to real world scientific research and improving English proficiency. It has been successfully held for two years since 2005.
ZJU-UCLA Summer Clinical Program
UCLA is setting up a new student exchange program that will allow ZJU medical students to attend the clinical practice at UCLA. It is expected that 6 students will be selected to visit UCLA in the summer 2008.
ZJU-UCLA Dissertation Research Program
On the basis of the ZJU students’ outstanding performance, more than a third of the ZJU students who participated in the Summer Research Program at UCLA were again invited to perform their bachelor degree dissertation research from January to the end of May during their senior year. UCLA provides the ZJU students with travel expense, living expense, research expense and health insurance for the program which was initiated since 2006.
